Western series are back in vogue, thanks in large part to the success of Yellowstone. The series, which also brought Kevin Costner back to the fore, tells the story of a family clan that heads a huge ranch in Montana, United States.
To protect himself from competitors and real estate developers, patriarch John Dutton does not hesitate to use all methods – including the fastest – to maintain the prosperity of his property.
A huge success in the United States, the series has its share of fans in France as well. But while many series take inspiration from real events, it’s legitimate to ask, is Yellowstone also adapted from a true story? The answer to this question is no, the series is not based on an authentic story, but several elements of the program are, however, inspired by true events.
A childhood dream came true
The ranch that lends its name to the Yellowstone series is actually inspired by the estate near which Taylor Sheridan (the show’s creator) grew up, not in Montana, but in Texas. Founded in 1900, this ranch is called Four Sixes, or 6666, and covers an area of 1416 m²! And the owner of the place is none other than Taylor Sheridan.
During his Texas childhood, the latter grew up near a ranch run by the Burnett family, which specialized in breeding and selling competition horses. The personality of the Burnetts and their desire to preserve the prosperity of their estate at all costs was the inspiration for the character of John Dutton, but also for his ancestors in 1883 and 1923.
In the spring of 2021, a group of investors represented by Taylor Sheridan bought the ranch after the death of its owner Ann Burnett Marion for 347.7 million. To complete the deal, the latter did not hesitate to renew the contract with the company Paramount Global for the entire received investment of 200 million dollars.
But beyond the sentimental aspect, this investment can depreciate very quickly. Ranch 6666 appeared in the fourth season of Yellowstone and will soon be the subject of its own spin-off. The locations have also become the preferred filming location for all of Taylor Sheridan’s creations, Yellowstone related or not!
