Did Bob Marley meet and forgive the man who tried to kill him, like in the movie?

One of the highlights of Bob Marley: One Lovebiopic of the reggae legend starring Kingsley Ben-Adirin One Night in Miami… (2020) and Secret Invasion (2023), which is already showing in Brazilian cinemas, is a shooting attack suffered by Bob Marley and his family in 1976.

In the film, seven men attack the artist, who is with his wife, Rita (played by Lashana Lynchin Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), and members of his band and team, during a rehearsal for a performance, leaving several injured, although no fatalities.

In sequence, Marley performs a show, about two days after the attack, and shows the injuries to the audience, which includes one of those responsible for the attack. Soon after, he follows the artist to his residence and begs for his forgiveness. But did this really happen?

According to Matt Jenson, a professor at Berklee College of Music, the scenes never actually happened and are nothing more than “creative liberties” adopted by the biopic. [via Time]. Furthermore, in an interview available on YouTube, Marley says that he never saw who tried to kill him, despite claiming that he would be familiar with whoever tried to kill him.

The conversation continues with the interviewer asking Marley whether those responsible would have been captured at some point. The artist replies no: “Neither by justice, nor by the police”he adds.
