US rejects Lula’s comparison between Israel and the Holocaust: ‘We don’t agree’

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrives in Brazil amid the diplomatic crisis with Israel

The spokesperson of the State Department, Matthew Millerexpressed this Tuesday, 20th, that the WE I disagree with the comparison made by the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva among the actions of Israel In Gaza and the Holocaust.

“We obviously disagree with these comments,” Miller said at a news conference. “We have been very clear in saying that we do not believe that genocide has occurred in Gaza. We want to see the conflict end whenever possible. We want to see an increase in humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza. But we do not agree with these comments,” he underlined.

The spokesperson for Anthony Blinken commented on the PT member’s statements when asked if the US Secretary of State intends to address the issue with Lula. The head of American diplomacy will arrive in Brazil on Tuesday and will meet the Brazilian president in Brasilia on Wednesday the 21st. From there he will head to Rio de Janeiro, where he will participate in the meeting of G-20 foreign ministers.

The trip, already planned, coincides with the diplomatic crisis between Brazil and Israel, which is one of its major allies in the United States.

Tel-Aviv says Lula “crossed the red line” by comparing the war in Gaza to the extermination of Jews in 2nd war and has publicly accused of apology. Until that happens, Israel warns, he will be considered “persona non grata” in the country. The PT’s allies, however, exclude the possibility of a retraction and the crisis shows no signs of abating.

This was the latest criticism from the PT member, who has already accused Israel of “terrorism” and “genocide”, including support for appeal presented by South Africa to the International Court of Justice.

“What is happening in Gaza did not happen at any other moment in history, only when Hitler decided to kill the Jews,” Lula said over the weekend.

Despite Israel’s strong reaction, other countries maintain their distance from the crisis. So far, no head of state has intervened to defend Israel, which is facing growing international pressure. This is because its Defense Forces are preparing for an offensive in Rafah, the last stronghold for more than 1 million Palestinians, displaced by the conflict and squeezed on the border with Egypt.

The war began with the October 7 attack, when 1,200 people were killed and 240 were taken hostage, of whom around 130 are still under the control of Hamas terrorists in Gaza. On the Palestinian side, the death toll exceeds 29 thousand, according to the local Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas.
