Tonight on Amazon: Angelina Jolie as you’ve never seen her before

Do you know this little-known Angelina Jolie movie where she plays a top model? With the rather cold title of Anatomy of a Top Model, this feature film is an HBO TV movie that originally aired on January 31, 1998, and was not released in France until 2001, when Angelina Jolie became a movie star with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (. 2001). It is currently available on Prime Video via Warner Pass.

Anatomy of a Top Model tells the true story of Gia Karanji, a young woman who “went to New York” to pursue a modeling career. There she meets Wilhelmina Cooper (played by Faye Dunaway), the director of the Wilhelmina Models agency, who gives Gia access to shoots for big brands, but also introduces her to medication to keep her pace.

Very comfortable on screen, Angelina Jolie conveys with disturbing ease the vulnerability, energy and character of Gia Karanji, who literally explodes the modeling codes of the time by establishing new poses and faces that will be adopted by all top models. Jolie won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Made for Television for her role in Anatomy of a Top Model.

Gifted but still incredible, Elizabeth Mitchell (known for her role as Juliet in the TV series Lost) plays Linda, a make-up artist for models, who becomes close to Gia and tries to help her overcome her addiction.

The TV movie is directed by Michael Christopher, who reunites with Angelina Jolie for Original Sin (2001), an adaptation. Mississippi Mermaid in which he plays with Antonio Bandera. The novel was already brought to the screen by François Truffaut with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Catherine Deneuve.
