The students, including minors, received truncheon blows
Recordings of protesters and students being beaten with batons by law enforcement during protests have outraged Italy and become the center of a political clash in the country.
The cases occurred this Friday (23), also against minors, during the pro-Palestinian protests in Florence and Pisa. The Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, was accused by the opposition.
This Saturday (24th) the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, also criticized the police action.
“The president expressed to the Minister of the Interior, finding agreement, that the authority of the police is not measured with truncheons, but with the ability to guarantee security, while protecting, at the same time, freedom of public expression of opinions “The truncheons against young people demonstrate a failure”, reads a note from the presidency.
The secretary of the Democratic Party and opposition leader Elly Schlein: “Pisa has given an extraordinary democratic response. No more attacks against students. Piantedosi must give clarifications to Parliament and take responsibility. We cannot witness unacceptable scenes of attacks against minors, minors arrested and immobilized on the floor”.
The co-spokesman of the Green Europe party, Angelo Bonelli, called for the immediate resignation of the police commissioner of Pisa: “I saw the fury of the police who unleashed incredible violence. There is nothing that can justify this violence We await clarification and the police chief must be removed.”
The Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, said that the police “always do their duty”: “There was pressure in a demonstration and reaction from the police. I believe they always act within the interest of citizens’ safety and nothing else.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Chancellor Antonio Tajani said that the police are “untouchable”: “They are people who defend the State with low salaries, they are not ‘radical chic'”.
