Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will demonstrate this Sunday, the 25th, on Paulista Avenue, in Sao Paulo, in defense of the former president, investigated by the Federal Police (PF) for an alleged coup attempt. . Protesters showed up at the event dressed in green and yellow and carrying Brazilian and Israeli flags. Unlike other Bolsonarist demonstrations, the banners and posters attacking the Federal Supreme Court (STF) were not identified in the report.
Despite sparing criticism of the Supreme Court, protesters shouted calls for the impeachment of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). This week, Bolsonaro’s lawmakers filed an impeachment inquiry against the current president after he compared Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip to the Holocaust. Around 2.30pm, dozens of Bolsonaro’s deputies were already participating in the demonstration.
The Paulista demonstration is supported by the evangelical pastor Silas Malafaia, who on Friday (23) estimated that he would spend between R$90,000 and R$100,000 to pay for the entire structure of the event, such as the supply of water, the installation of fences and the internet broadcast – there are private security guards present, but the Military Police is also present on site. Malafaia has rented two electric trios arranged in an “L”: a larger one, where Bolsonaro and his most important allies are located, from where the speeches are delivered, and a second vehicle, without a soundproof structure, to accommodate the other guests, photographers and cameramen. .
Present are governors Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), with whom Bolsonaro stayed in the capital of São Paulo, Ronaldo Caiado (União-GO) and Jorginho Mello (PL-SC), as well as senators, federal and state deputies from several states Brazilians. The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (PL-SP), is also present on site.
OR Estadao identified the organization of the caravans departing from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso and the Federal District. The former president discouraged demonstrations across Brazil and asked his supporters to focus on Paulista Avenue in a bid to demonstrate as much popular support as possible.
Bolsonaro asked protesters to use the colors green and yellow and not to carry signs against the Federal Supreme Court (STF) or other institutions. In addition to concerns about possible legal consequences, this is an attempt to maintain the focus of the demonstration as a response to legal attacks against the former president, who considers himself persecuted by the STF and the Federal Police.
The act was proclaimed by Bolsonaro himself four days after being the target of Operation Tempus Veritatis (the moment of truth, in Portuguese) on 8 February. The PF is investigating an alleged coup attempt in Brazil before and after the 2022 elections. The former president has had his passport confiscated and four of his former advisors have been preventively arrested.
Bolsonaro released a statement on the case on Thursday the 22nd, but remained silent. The former president’s defense even unsuccessfully requested the postponement of the testimony since he had not had access to the entire trial and the testimony of former aide-de-camp Mauro Cid. The PF’s operation was based on materials it made available, such as messages exchanged with the former president’s allies and video of a ministerial meeting in July 2022.
Based on the content found on the CID’s cell phone, the PF claims that Bolsonaro participated in the drafting of a decree that provided for the holding of new elections and the arrest of authorities, such as STF ministers Alexandre de Moraes and Gilmar Mendes and the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). At the proposal of the former head of the executive, the document was modified and only the arrest of Moraes was maintained. The decree never came into force.
In the video found on the former aide-de-camp’s computer, the former Prime Minister of Institutional Security, Augusto Heleno, states that “if we have to reverse the situation, it will be before the elections”. He was also targeted by Tempus Veritatis together with former ministers Braga Netto, Anderson Torres, Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, the former commander of the Navy, Almir Garnier Santos, and the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, arrested red-handed for possession of a firearm for which he did not have a permit. In total, 23 people testified at the same time as Bolsonaro on Thursday. Unlike the others, Torres and Valdemar answered the investigators’ questions.
In addition to the alleged coup attempt, Bolsonaro is the subject of other investigations conducted by the STF. Among these, the sale of jewels received as a gift from the Presidency of the Republic, a case revealed by Estadaothe scam on the vaccination cards of the former president and his daughter and the investigation investigating the intellectual authors of January 8, when the coup plotters invaded the Planalto Palace, the Congress and the STF.
