The former president spoke for about 25 minutes on Avenida Paulista, this Sunday the 25th
BRASILIA – Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) declared on Sunday (25), during a political event on Paulista Avenue, in Sao Paulo, that he suffers persecution that intensified after leaving the presidency at the end of 2022 and asking the amnesty for prisoners of January 8th. The former president even denied the coup movement after the electoral defeat.
“A coup is a tank in the streets, it’s a weapon, it’s a conspiracy. None of this was done in Brazil. Why do they continue to accuse me of a coup? Because there is a minute of state of defense. A coup d’état using the Constitution? I clarify that the state of siege begins with the convening of the Council of the Republic by the president. Has this been done? No,” he said.
The demonstration with thousands of people was personally called by Bolsonaro to demonstrate political strength and popular support at a time when he and his allies are under pressure from investigations by the Federal Police and the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
The former president recalled the electoral defeat by saying that “what happened in October 2022? should be considered a ‘turned page’. However, he once again cast suspicion on the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). “We can even seeing a football team without fans become champions, but we can’t understand how there is a president without people by his side,” he said.
Bolsonaro was advised to avoid speaking out against the STF so as not to worsen his and his allies’ legal situation. The former president is under investigation in at least eight investigations, from fake news about electronic voting machines to coup attacks and the sale of jewels from the presidency’s collection.
He will not be eligible until 2030 and allies are already working on the possibility of his arrest. “If they arrest you, you will go away exalted. If they arrest you, it will not be for your destruction, but for their destruction,” Pastor Silas Malafaia, organizer of the event, said during the speech.
Near Paulista Avenue, supporters avoided messages targeting members of the judiciary and calls for military intervention. Bolsonaro specifically asked that no one show up with “banners and posters against anyone”.
In addition to Bolsonaro and Malafaia, the deputies Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO) and Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio Freitas (Republicans), and the senator Magno Malta (PL-ES) spoke. Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro also spoke to the audience. The speeches had biblical references and a preachy tone.
