This Saturday (24th) the 30th edition of the SAG Awards (awards from the Hollywood Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) took place. This is one of the major television and film awards, considered a sort of “Oscar thermometer” – and the big highlight of the evening was Oppenheimer.
As usual, the awards took place during a live broadcast ceremony, however this was the first time this has happened on Netflix, following a decade-long broadcast partnership with TNT and TBS, which ended in 2022.
After a turbulent year that saw a historic SAG-AFTRA strike halt Hollywood productions for months, the union has come together once again to honor the top film and television performances of 2023.
From Oscar contenders like the heavyweight cast of Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.) to television juggernauts like the cast of Succession, the night’s champions delivered performances that garnered praise on the big and small screens in the last year.
Oppenheimer’s cast received the night’s biggest honor for their collective work on Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster, which is expected to win the best picture Oscar next month.
Murphy and Downey Jr. also won individual trophies, as did The Rejected actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Killers of the Flower Moon actress Lily Gladstone.
