The formula of creating spin-offs from successful series often seems like a smart move to continue capitalizing on the original success. However, this strategy does not always prove successful.
There are cases where spin-offs of famous and beloved series have been spectacular failures or have gone unnoticed by the general public. Below we list five of these cases. Watch!
Spin-offs that didn’t work
The sitcom “Friends” is one of the most famous and successful series of all time. So the idea of doing a spin-off with any of the show’s protagonists can’t go wrong, right?
Well, that’s not what happened with “Joey” (“Vida de Artista”, in Brazil), derived from “Friends” starring the character Joey Tribbiani, played by Matt LeBlanc. In addition to not being well received by critics, the series had low ratings and for this reason ended up being canceled after the second season.
In the series, Joey moves from New York to Hollywood in hopes of furthering his acting career.

Based on the book series of the same name, the teen crime drama series “Pretty Little Liars” was a huge success. The positive impact was so great that the attraction became a franchise, spawning three spin-offs.
One such derivative was “Ravenswood,” set during the fourth season of the original series. The plot is set in the fictional town of Ravenswood and follows a group of strangers whose lives are intertwined by a curse that has haunted the place for generations.
However, the series turned out to be a real fiasco: with low ratings, the attraction was canceled after the first season.

Derived from the popular crime thriller “The Blacklist,” “Redemption” is another example of a spinoff that ended due to lower-than-expected ratings. The series only had one season.
The series follows secret agent Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold), who teams up with his mother, Susan Hargrave (Famke Janssen), leader of a secret mercenary organization dedicated to solving crimes the government prefers not to address.

“That’s So Raven” is one of the most successful series on the Disney Channel. A success in Brazil, the attraction also had excellent ratings in its country of origin. After the end, the series spawned two spin-offs. One of them is also very well known here: “Cory in the White House”, starring Raven’s brother, Cory Baxter (Kyle Massey).
In the attraction, Cory moves to the White House with his father (Rondell Sheridan reprises his role as Victor Baxter), who has found work as the president of the United States’ chef.
However, the teen sitcom did not repeat the same success as the original series and was canceled after two seasons.

Concluding two seasons, “The Walking Dead: A New Universe” is one of several spin-offs that explore and expand the post-zombie apocalypse universe of the hit series “The Walking Dead.”
However, “A New Universe” did not please most audiences and critics. Some complaints state that the attraction has uninteresting characters and a slow, boring pace.
