Mary Poppins receives new rating 60 years after release

The film was rated for ages 14 and over because it contains discriminatory language referring to the indigenous tribe of South Africa

Sixty years after its launch, Mary Poppinsone of Disney’s greatest classics, had its rating changed in the United Kingdom, by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), for containing discriminatory language.

Previously classified by the association as U (Universal or Livre, in free translation), the film was reclassified to PG (Parental Guidance or Parental Guidance), which means that parents need to evaluate the film before showing it to their children under 14.

According to information from the DailyMail, the decision would have been made due to the term “Hottentots”, which is used to refer to the indigenous Khoekhoe tribe, from South Africa, in the film. Derived from Old Dutch, the word is considered racist because it refers to the clicking sounds present in the tribe’s language, associated by the term with stuttering.

According to the vehicle, “Hottentots” is used twice throughout the film, at least Admiral Boomlived by Reginald Owenin reference to the African people. “We understand from our research into racism and discrimination that a key concern for parents is the potential for exposing children to discriminatory language or behavior that they may find distressing or repeat without realizing the potential offense.”explained the BBFC to the DailyMail.
