Kenneth Mitchell, of Captain Marvel and Star Trek, dies at age 49

Kenneth Mitchell, known for playing roles in Captain Marvel AND Star Trek: Discovery, died last Sunday (25) at the age of 49. In a statement on social media, the family confirmed the death of the actor, who had been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for more than five years.

For five and a half years, Ken faced a series of terrifying challenges due to ALS. And in true Ken fashion, he has overcome them all with grace and commitment to living a full and joyful life in every moment. Ken will be forever grateful for the tremendous amount of love and endless support he has received from his community throughout this journey. Above all, the courage, resilience and strength demonstrated by his extraordinary wife, her family and his friends. He was a giver, a listener, a sentimentalist and an excellent observer of his surroundings.

According to Pfizer’s blog, ALS is a rare disease that causes the progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the brain responsible for controlling voluntary movements. The carrier suffers gradual paralysis, losing the ability to speak, move, swallow and breathe independently.

There are two types of disease, sporadic: considered the most common. They are casual, i.e. they have no known cause, and Familial: associated with family history, i.e. the disease is hereditary.

Without a cure, ALS has treatments that can slow the progression of the disease and ensure a better quality of life for patients.
