They bring freshness to environments, but require natural light, ventilation and adequate hydration.
Incorrect: The mandacaru cactus (Cereu jamacaru) and the succulent echeveria (Echeveria sp) are not suitable for the most humid area of the house. “They both store water, so they rot in the steam from the shower,” says landscape architect Claudia Diamant, of São Paulo.
Right: The golden rain orchid (Oncidium sp), native to shady places, is best suited. “It is light and cheerful, but does not like excess water, so avoid watering it too much”, advises Claudia. Once a week is enough.

Wrong: “It’s easy to be enchanted by beautifully flowering species and bring them into your home, but few can handle it,” says landscape designer Claudia Muñoz. “Spring, for example, is a vine that needs a lot of sun and water. After ten days indoors, it will start to wilt.”
Right: for interiors, always choose shaded or semi-shaded species, such as yucca, peace lily, pacová and rafhis. They don’t get sun or only need three or four hours of natural light a day. The bamboo palm (Chamaedorea erumpens) is suitable for shaded areas, which is why it is free. “Place it near the window for ventilation and light. Water twice a week: since the pot does not get sun, the soil accumulates water.”
Can I have vases in the room?
Landscapers do not recommend. “It’s a question of hygiene: in addition to the environment which accumulates a lot of dust, the plant can contain some parasites, such as aphids and cochineal”, explains Claudia Muñoz, of Linea Paisagismo. In fact, if this were to happen, resolve it immediately: dry or cut the diseased leaf. And, if you can’t give up greenery in your room, opt for a vase with natural flowers. “Plants release carbon dioxide at night and it is unhealthy to share space with this gas,” adds Claudia Diamant, of Arquitetura da Paisagem. “So prefer to place them on the bedroom terrace, if you have one,” she recommends.
The species have popular and scientific names given by professionals. Due to the enormous proliferation of hybrid plants it is impossible to guarantee the complete correctness of the names.
