The Resident on TF1: The Series Ends… But Why?

After six seasons and 107 episodes, The Resident ended last year in the United States, which, of course, did not cause disappointment and anger among fans.

The sixth and final season of the medical series hosted by Matt Czuchry, presented every Wednesday on TF1, ends this Wednesday, February 28 with the broadcast of the last four episodes in France from 9.10pm. Which will be a nice ending to the adventures of Conrad, Devon (Manish Dayal), Belle (Bruce Greenwood) and their colleagues at Chastain Hospital.

Even if the last episode was not completely conceived as a real series finale with apotheosis, surprises and returns, as is often the case in the world of series.

What do the latest episodes of The Resident have to offer?

In the first episode of the evening, Conrad sees a ghost from his past when Nick’s father, whom he hasn’t heard from in five years, is admitted to Chastain with an extremely low heart rate. Meanwhile, Cade (Kaylee Ronayne) finds the courage to confront Ian (Andrew McCarthy) about his attitude, Leela (Anuja Joshi) worries about Padma (Aneesha Joshi), and a surprise kiss promises to turn several characters’ lives upside down. down..

The final episode of the series sees emergency rooms filling up after a severe storm causes a horrific helicopter crash in Atlanta. Finally, in the finale, Conrad is forced to abandon preparations for Gigi’s 6th birthday party when Sam is admitted to Chastain with a high fever. Keith (Jane Leaves), on the other hand, is forced to ask for help to intervene. When Heart goes to the hospital for Governor Betsy’s (Stephen Culp) heart transplant.

But that’s not all. Indeed, a marriage proposal is also on the agenda for the final episodes. As for Conrad, he’s preparing to take a major step forward, more than five years after Nick’s death (which was inspired by a tragedy the series creator experienced).

Why was the series canceled after six seasons?

The April 2023 cancellation of The Resident wasn’t strictly speaking a big surprise. Already because rumors about the probable end of the series have been circulating for several months. Especially supported by Fox’s order of only 13 episodes for Season 6 (compared to Season 5’s 23), which wasn’t reassuring in itself.

But that’s not all: an auction announced in March 2023 dedicated to the accessories of the “big medical series” in the state of Georgia, where The Resident has been filming since 2017, then appeared as the final nail in the coffin. The series experienced several departures over the course of the season, including Shawnette Renee Wilson and Emily VanCamp.

If The Resident stopped, it was largely due to the erosion of its audience. Season 6 averaged just 6.9 million viewers (repeat on D+7), down 12% from the previous season and down 35% from Season 1, according to Deadline.

But above all, Target’s ratings weren’t enough anymore, as the medical series in the 18-49 age group posted a 0.5 rating for its sixth season, marking a 27% year-over-year decline. Only ninth among Fox’s feature programs.

An audience that clearly no longer justified the cost of Fox channel’s broadcast of The Resident, which is owned by Disney Studios on 20th Television.

Fortunately, the medical series is entitled to a fairly complete and satisfying conclusion. The writers — who knew their son was in danger of cancellation — opted for a generally happy ending to Season 6 without any major suspense.
