Petista said the issue of Essequibo, an oil-rich area of Guyana, which Venezuela feared could be invaded, had not been addressed.
Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali, has inaugurated a hall in the country’s capital, Georgetown, named after President Lula (PT). The atmosphere of the Arthur Chang Conference Center, where both met for a bilateral meeting this Thursday 29th, pays homage to an episode that happened in 2010.
At the time, during his second term, Lula was in the room and an accident occurred with the air conditioning, which stopped working. Despite this, the meeting continued even though the president and others present were hot and “extremely sweaty”, the Guyanese president said.
President Lula commented on the episode in a speech to journalists after the meeting. “The meeting I had with the president was not behind closed doors, many ministers participated because it was the inauguration of a room that bore my name, because when I came here, 10 years ago, the ceiling fell. I was present, I did not interrupt the meeting and they decided to honor me,” Lula said.

“We did not discuss the Essequibo issue because it is not the time. It was a bilateral meeting to discuss development, investments. President Irfaan knows, as does President Maduro, that Brazil is willing to talk to them whenever necessary , when necessary. We want to convince people that it is possible, through a lot of dialogue, to maintain peace,” Lula said.
The dispute over the territory of Essequibo, between Venezuela and Guyana, has existed since the end of the 19th century, but has returned to the center of the debate after Nicolás Maduro’s government called a referendum to “reaffirm” its rights to the territory. Since then the region has lived under the tension of an armed conflict.
