Italian screenwriter and director Stefano Sollima has made a name for himself in film and television thanks to large-scale detective films and series. He signed ACAB: All Cops Are Bastards, Suburra, Sicario: La Guerre des cartels and No Regrets.
We also owe the creation of the cult series Gomorra, rated 4.3/5 by AlloCiné viewers, but also the fiction Romanzo Criminale and ZeroZeroZero. Very prolific, Stefano Sollima has just finished shooting the next series, Il Mostro, which will air on Netflix.
Italy’s darkest criminal case
Planned in four parts, Il Mostro is a new creation by Stefano Sollima in collaboration with Leonardo Fasoli. This series revisits the unsolved case of serial killer ‘The Monster of Florence’, responsible for nine double murders between 1968 and 1985, and is based on testimonies, journalistic investigations and court documents.
Despite a lengthy and thorough investigation, the weapon used in each murder—a .22 caliber Beretta—was never found, and the killer was never arrested.
The case is one of the longest and most complex investigations ever conducted in Italy, and the “Monster of Florence” is considered the most brutal serial killer in the country’s history.
An ambitious shoot for Stefano Solima
According to The Hollywood ReporterHaving been able to go to the set of Il Mostro and talk to Stefano Sollima, the series seems to be the most intense and ambitious project of the filmmaker.
Indeed, it was shot almost entirely from dusk to dawn between Florence and the outskirts of Rome, with extremely low temperatures and detailed restorations. “to the nearest millimeter” Crime scenes.
But Stefano Sollima didn’t want to focus only on the “Monster of Florence” with this series, he also wanted to tell the story of a dark period in Italian society:
“Our ultimate goal was to try to reconstruct the historical reality. We tried to tell all the truth, to reconstruct the country, its habits and systems, its hypocrisy, which prevented the case from being solved.”
Stefano Sollima and Leonardo Fasoli wanted to tell all the points of view of the story, of all the “monsters” involved in the case. The duo had to do a huge amount of work to verify all the information:
We were able to tell all Italy of those years. And all the aspects of the case about which everyone has an opinion, but which no one has really touched – a huge number of ideas, suggestions and facts.
The horror, brutality and brutality of the murders is only one part of this story, and not necessarily the most interesting, just the most obvious. The fact is that this series, like all the ones I like, asks a lot of questions and doesn’t pretend to give answers. And this is what I remember from this experience. “
The series Il Mostro does not yet have a release date on Netflix.
