Anime fans around the world have an Oscar of their own, and this year, the ceremony takes place right next to the awards ceremony hosted by the Hollywood Academy.
While the stars of the big screen meet on March 10 in Los Angeles, USA, the greatest designers and artists of animation meet in Tokyo, Japan, a week earlier – this Saturday (2).
The 2024 Anime Awards, affectionately nicknamed the “Oscars of Anime,” is the Japanese cartoon industry’s premier award. The event has been held since 2017 on the online platform Crunchyroll, a giant in the sector.
There will be 32 categories in total, including Best Series, Best Film, Best Music and Best Dubbing. All winners were chosen by a jury made up of journalists, critics and market professionals – including 10 Brazilians –, in addition to the popular vote, which ended on January 28. This year there were more than 34 million votes, a record for the award.
Voice actress Sally Amaki and host Jon Kabira will host the ceremony, which will also be attended by singer Megan Thee Stallion and actress Iman Vellani (“MCU’s Ms. Marvel”).
The Anime Awards seek, year after year, to popularize the format around the world. A Japanese phenomenon, this type of cartoon is also successful in other countries, but is still seen by most as something childish.
The award attempts to deconstruct this image. The drawings in this year’s competition show that an anime can have a more mature approach, far beyond cute little monsters Pokemon.

Speaking of maturity, one of the favorites to win the “Best Anime of the Year” award is The chainsaw man (or the Chainsaw Man, in the free translation). The cartoon is aimed at an audience over 16 years old and tells the story of a teenager who must pay off a debt that his father left with the Yakuza, the main Japanese criminal organization.
Violent scenes, criticism of the mafia and capitalism, demons, acid humor and a 16-year-old boy with raging hormones have led to The chainsaw man to 25 Oscar nominations this year.
In the main category of the evening he will compete with:

Brazilian in the dispute
YES! We will have the Brazilians in the dispute! Not among the designers, but among the voice actors. One of the 32 categories is “Best Vocal Performance in Portuguese.”
Amanda Brigido is competing (for her work in Tomo-chan is a girl!), Erick Bougleux (Konosuba), William Briggs (A piece), Léo Rabelo (Jujutsu Kaisen), Luisa Viotti (The chainsaw man) and Vágner Fagundes (Mafia Psycho 100).

Where to look
This is the hard part. Since the awards ceremony takes place in Japan, anime fans will have to get up early to watch the ceremony live. Mark your calendar: 6pm Tokyo, 6am Brasilia time.
Crunchyroll will broadcast it, with simultaneous translation, on its official channels on Youtube and so on Contraction.
