Released in September 2021, the first Dune earned $391 million worldwide in its theaters on a $165 million budget. It is Denis Villeneuve’s biggest hit, even surpassing Blade Runner 2049 (260 million). In addition, Dune won over French audiences, 3.1 million of whom went to the cinema.

Given the complexity of the novel, Denis Villeneuve chose to adapt it into two films. Note that Dune is the director’s third sci-fi film, following First Contact (2016) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017). To make the fierce Fade-Rauta, who is an excellent fighter, credible, Austin Butler spent several months training with stuntman Duffy Gever (who was a Navy SEAL) and martial arts specialist Roger Yuan. The actor says:I knew the fight scenes would be very demanding and I wanted them to be strong on screen, so we practiced a lot. We practiced a lot of Kali, Filipino stick martial arts and knife fighting.
