Rede D’Or differentiates itself through an unprecedented quality validation model

Mandatory to be evaluated by external and independent organizations, all units of the institution have their own indicators verified in two distinct phases

In a pioneering initiative in the Brazilian private healthcare sector, in 2023, Rede D’Or – the largest healthcare company in Latin America – began publishing data on the quality of its hospitals in the country’s main newspapers and magazines. Along the way, other institutions have done the same. An advantage for Brazilians who, with greater access to information, can choose healthcare institutions more decisively. However, this movement has raised questions: how reliable are the numbers provided by the institutions?

Always attentive to the accuracy and truthfulness of its data, in the implementation of the largest Technical Quality program in private hospitals in the country, Rede D’Or has made a decisive choice: all its hospitals are mandatorily assessed by external bodies and independent. Therefore, it has implemented, on a national scale, the largest external indicator accuracy program in Brazil.

Data double-checked

Initially, hospitals send a health data report to the company’s quality department. Verify the correctness of the numbers reported in an internal audit phase, recording the results of the technical quality indicators. These results are then subjected to a double level of external control: by the accreditors and by the external audit, contracted independently. The use of accreditation bodies is something historic for Rede D’Or, which seeks to accredit all its hospitals. The so-called “accreditors” – institutes specialized in assessing the quality of healthcare organizations – are mostly validated by the International Society for Healthcare Quality (ISQua).

“An organization that has obtained ISQua EEA organizational accreditation demonstrates in practice this tool to provide Like all Rede D’Or units, Vila Nova Star (SP) is part of the largest technical quality program in private hospitals in the country, an assessment that meets international quality standards,” says Dr. Carsten Engel, CEO of the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua).

“Hospital accreditation is a fundamental pillar for guaranteeing patient safety, ensuring standards of excellence and quality in the healthcare services provided,” underlines Leslee Thompson, CEO of HSO – Health Standards Organization & Accreditation Canada.

At this stage, accreditors such as Joint Commission International (JCI, USA), Qmentum International (Canada), Agencia de Calidad Sanitaria de Andalucía (ACSA – Spain) and the National Accreditation Organization (ONA – Brazil) visit the Rede D’ units Now and in this process they also check their technical quality indicators.

The audit is carried out by highly trained professionals to investigate everything that happens in a healthcare organization. They consult documents, check databases, interview healthcare professionals they meet during the visit, speak with leaders, evaluate data from tests performed, read patients’ medical records, among other processes. Cross-checking the information allows you to verify whether the data has been collected correctly and whether the indicators have evolved as expected.

In an innovative and pioneering way in Brazil, Rede D’Or has decided to adopt an independent external audit, generating an additional level of security and reliability. “We evaluate the reliability and validate the measurements every time a new measurement is implemented. Therefore, the higher the level of precision, the closer the result found is to the reference or the real value,” explains Helidea Lima, director of corporate quality at Rede D’O.

This double independent evaluation process takes place continuously in the 73 Rede D’Or hospitals. A full cycle of external evaluations is completed annually in all units.

Quality at scale

External evaluations are part of the Rede D’Or Technical Quality Programme. The largest of its kind among private institutions in the country, it monitors 50 indicators across all hospitals in the network. The data collected highlights the successful initiatives which, collected in the Rede D’Or Assistance Practices Manual, allow the successful experience of one unit to be replicated in another, regardless of geographical distance.

With continuous internal control and dual external control, Rede D’Or establishes a solid foundation to grow and expand its national operations, reinforcing its commitment to the quality of care for each patient throughout Brazil. “The gradual construction of Rede D’Or’s internal audit activities has allowed the incorporation of processes used by teams of external assessors, as it identifies good practices in its hospital units. I underline that this has generated a very positive impact on the segment Brazilian healthcare country, raising the levels of quality of care, even among its main competitors, increasing the quality perceived by patients”, underlines Franklin Lindolf Bloedorn, international evaluator at Joint Commission International (JCI).
