On Sunday at 9.10pm, TF1 broadcast the first title of Dune, just in time to accompany the cinema release of Dune Part 2. The two films are directed by Denis Villeneuve and Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, among others, and did you know that this first opus contains a reference to the greatest war film of all time?
With an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 on AlloCiné, Apocalypse Now is definitely a landmark in terms of war movies! Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, it explores the Vietnam War like never before, starring Martin Sheen, Dennis Hopper, Robert Duvall and Marlon Brando.
Is Dune 2 a good movie? The first viewer reviews are here (and spoiler-free)!
And it is Brando’s performance in Apocalypse Now that refers to Denis Villeneuve! If you Stop for 36 minutes and 36 seconds Specifically, you’ll see Stellan Skarsgård (who plays Baron Vladimir Harkonnen) run his hand over his shaved head while bowing. An image that we see very precisely in Coppola’s film:
Brando in Apocalypse Now / Skarsgård in Dune
Two references for the price of one!
The coincidence is hard to believe, especially since Dunne allows himself at least one more allusion when the Baron pulls himself out of the bath while he is completely submerged in it and turns his face to the right, a scene identical to Coppola’s picture. Classic:

Martin Sheen / Stellan Skarsgård
So many winks from one filmmaker to another. Denis Villeneuve never hid his love for film. to the media letter boxThe director listed the feature film as one of his four favorite films, a list he specifies is ever-evolving: “(…) Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now is probably the movie I’ve seen the most in my life. I love”.
