Did you know that Australian director Buzz Lurman, whose “Elvis” is currently in theaters, was almost directed by Leonardo DiCaprio as a famous historical figure? I will tell you which one!
Buzz Luhrmann, whose Elvis is currently in theaters, filmed Leonardo DiCaprio twice: Romeo + Juliet, in 1997, then in The Great Gatsby in 2013. But did you know that the Australian director was also very close to staging a Hollywood star. In the shoes of a major historical figure?
In 2002, Baz Luhrmann co-produced a biographical film about Alexander the Great with producer Dino de Laurent, a project he had been undertaking for decades. The film, shot by Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox, will not be shot in the end. During his last visit Happy Sad Confused podcastLuhrmann returned to the reasons that forced him not to bring the life of this famous character from antiquity to the screen.
“Dino de Laurentiis built a studio for films made about Alexander, I released my version, but to be honest, it became … Oliver Stone wanted to make his own version and I’m not a racer”Explains the filmmaker, under pressure, turned out to be the first to release a biographical film about Alexander the Great. “I can not work like that. Besides, my wife and I wanted children. I was at a stage where I wanted to separate work and personal life.”
Buzz Lurman’s biographical film, which saw Leonardo DiCaprio as King of Macedonia and Mel Gibson as father, will not see the light of day. Finally, it was Oliver Stone’s version that came out on screens in 2005, with Colin Farrell as Alexander the Great, Val Kilmer and Angelina Jolie as the latter’s parents.
For reference, we note that Baz Luhrmann was not the only one who wanted to start a biographical film about Alexander the Great with DiCaprio Headliner. Martin Scorsese, who is very close to the American actor, really had this desire for some time.
