Plague on France 2: Did you know that this character does not exist in Camus’s book?

On Monday, March 4, 2024, from 9:10 p.m., France 2 offers its viewers the opportunity to discover a modern, serial adaptation of The Plague, a literary work by Albert Camus. In this dystopian version of the famous story, the audience goes to the near future, 2029, when a new pandemic arises.

This character that does not exist in the book

Here we find some familiar faces from French fiction, notably Frédéric Pierrot (in therapy) as Dr. Bernard Rieux. This answers Hugo Becker, who plays the journalist Sylvain Rambert, and Judith Chemla, who plays the role of the music teacher, Lucie Ferrière.

Actress Sofia Esaidi also participates in this project, whose originality and modernity should arouse curiosity. He plays Laurence Molinier, Sylvain Rambert’s partner. But did you know that this character does not exist in the writer’s novel?

At a press conference to introduce the fiction, screenwriters Gilles Tauran and Georges-Marc Benamou explained why they invented this hero: “There are almost no female characters in the book. So we thought to ourselves that maybe we could do something…“

“The paradox is that Camus makes Rieux say that “a world without love is like a dead world”, while there are very few women in history and very little history.analyzed by the authors. Therefore, we tried to develop the romantic relationship between Rambert and Laurence as much as possible (…) in order to attract the public in a different way and also for modernity”.

Sofia Esaidi added:I also think that we relate to love in such situations. In the face of adversity, love can be what saves us. I found it very interesting to talk about it in this story.“

The scientist’s translator also revealed: “ It really allowed me to be all in the imagination and not have to be in the details. I made this character exactly how I wanted it to be.“
