The movie “Top Gun: Maverick” continues to fly at the box office and has now surpassed one billion dollars in global box office.
That makes the film, Tom Cruise’s sequel to 1986’s classic “Top Gun”, only the second since the start of the pandemic to cross that milestone. “Top Gun: Maverick” was also the first of Tom Cruise’s career to hit $ 1 billion at the box office, which includes over $ 520 million in the United States and approximately $ 485 million in the rest of the world.
“Top Gun: Maverick” had already become the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career a few days ago, when it crossed the $ 800 million mark. Prior to “Maverick,” Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film of his career was 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” with $ 791 million gross.
One of the points that make “Top Gun: Maverick” so successful is the fact that the film has such a great international performance, despite not reaching major markets like Russia and China. Additionally, the story brought an older audience to theaters, while still attracting a younger audience, even with a 36-year gap between the release of the original and the sequel.
“Top Gun: Maverick” began its theatrical trajectory by becoming the largest US and overseas release of Tom Cruise’s career. The film later received competition with the release of “Jurassic World: Dominion”, but remained high nonetheless.
Now, it was time for the release of “Elvis” and, despite having already completed a month in theaters, “Top Gun: Maverick” drew even with the release of the biopic of Elvis Presley at the US box office, for a total of $ 35.5 million at the end of the week.
“Top Gun: Maverick” remains available in theaters.
