‘Scarier Than Other Ghosts’: Next Ghostbusters Movie ‘Will Blow Your Mind!’

The second trailer for Ghostbusters: The Ice Menace has just been released. These new images allow us to discover the feature film’s big villain: Garaka, the evil spirit in Gozer’s vein.

Directed by Jason Reitman in 2021, The Ice Menace is directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Legacy. The latter met Jason Reitman in 2005, they both worked on their films in neighboring studios and became friends.

Gil Kenan previously directed the animated film Monster House, the adventure film City of Shadows and the 2015 remake of Poltergeist.

Co-writing Ghostbusters: The Frozen Men alongside Jason Reitman and Jason Blumenfelg, Kenan was able to work with Ivan Reitman, director of the original saga, until the latter’s death in February 2022.

In Ice Danger, the Spengler family returns to where it all began: the iconic New York fire station. They then have to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who have created a secret research lab to take ghost hunting to the next level.

When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, two teams of ghostbusters must join forces to protect their homes and save the world from a second ice age.

Led by the original Ghostbusters team and newcomers – the family of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis, died February 2014) – the feature film stars Paul Rudd, Kerry Coon, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Celeste Oh Connor, Kumail Nanjian, Patton Oswalt, and Logan Kim.

It is scheduled to hit our cinemas on April 10. Ghostbusters: The Ice Menace It promises a return to basics and a terrifying ghost hunt, as the director tells us.

The trailer also sees an ectoplasm familiar to fans of the franchise: Slimer, who crosses Finn Wolfhard at the end of the video.

Ghostbusters: The Ice Menace

On the day of the trailer’s launch, we were able to speak with Gil Kenan, who revisits this opus’s links to the original saga and talks about the film’s big bad guy: Garraka.

AlloCiné: How does this second opus differ from the previous one?

Gil Kenan: The threat of ice will spoil you! It’s an epic movie and it’s scarier than any other Ghostbusters. The dangers are bigger and more dangerous.

We wanted to take this film and reinvent this franchise that is so dear to so many people. We will witness the birth of a supernatural force in the role of Phoebe Spengler McKenna Grace.

At the end of the previous film, we see the family heading to Manhattan, and we understand why the film is set in New York this time, in homage to the films of the 80s. We are currently publishing a limited series of comics. I will explain in more detail what happened between the previous movie and this movie. Passage from Oklahoma to Manhattan.

It also helps us understand the new synergy between the various characters in this family of ghost hunters.

Garraka is a bit like the new Gozer, but more dangerous

And then, of course, we have a new villain, Garracca, to scare the crap out of you. We also see a little more in the new trailer. Garaka is a centuries-old evil force. He was stuck in the facility. the character he plays Kumail Nanjian will be at the forefront of the discovery of this object.

In comparison, Garraka looks a bit like a new gosher from the old “Ghostbusters.” Except that Garaka is the most dangerous of all other movie ghosts. It has the power to turn our deepest fears against us and destroy us from within. It can affect a person or the whole society.

AlloCiné: This film pays homage to the 1984 feature film…

Gil Kenan: Indeed, by setting this film in New York, it draws a clear parallel to the first film, which was set in Manhattan. We wanted to rediscover the state of mind and the magic of the first opus of this franchise.

And then you see that, just like the team in the 1984 movie, who were treated as outsiders by the population, the new team of ghost hunters are also considered outsiders.

AlloCiné: What was the biggest challenge for you on set?

Gil Kenan : The whole film was an incredible challenge! There is one scene that was a really dangerous exercise. But I don’t want to reveal it now so as not to spoil the audience’s enjoyment.

What I can say is that the moments when you have all the main actors on the same stage are moments of real challenge and pure enjoyment, given the level of talent you have as a director. You really have to be very precise to keep everything in perfect sync.

These are incredible, emotional moments because it all started with a script written by Jason Reitman and now it’s all coming to life and you’re the director. It’s surreal, it’s incredible to experience such moments.

Bill Murray and Paul Rudd

Especially since I’m still that kid who loved the movies made in the 80s, when I was 8 years old. I had just arrived in Los Angeles with my family and I remember that Ghostbusters was in theaters for over four months when it came out in 1984. unheard of.

I remember seeing it with my father at the legendary Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. So now the chance to be a part of this franchise that I love so much is incredible. My life is a movie.

AlloCiné: Ivan Reitman, creator and director of the first films, left us in 2022. Did that affect the production of this film?

Gil Kenan: His influence and his spirit on our film is unquestionable. Ivan really guided me in creating the script of the previous film.

Ivan Reitman was a big influence on this film

Besides, we were fortunate enough to be able to explain to him the whole story of the danger of the ice, and to hear his opinion before he left us. So yes, Ivan Reitman was a big influence on this movie and the entire Ghostbusters series.

AlloCiné: The original ghost hunters are back in The Ice Menace, helping a new generation. How did you feel seeing them in front of your camera?

Gil Kenan: We managed to make the ghost hunters from the old movies and the Spengler family co-exist in perfect harmony. I learned the art of comedy from phenomenal actors like Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. It’s amazing that after so many years their creative genius is still going strong.

Paul Rudd, Carrie Kuhn, McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard

without forgetting Annie Potts who reprises the role of Janine Melnitz that she had in 1984’s Ghostbusters! Seeing the three of them together takes me back to my youth when they were saving the world from ultimate destruction.

In this part, Peter Venkman, the character played by Bill Murray, is a professor, a wise man, a legendary ghost hunter. He did not lose any courage. He is willing to return to form and go ghost if necessary.

AlloCiné: Young actor Finn Wolfhard, known for the TV series Stranger Things, is also back.

Gil Kenan: quite. We can also see some parallels between the 80s world of Ghostbusters and Stranger Things. These are worlds with fantastical creatures and quite a bit of dark humor. You follow Trevor’s trajectory in this film, and I think you’ll be surprised by the evolution of this character.
