Martin Scorsese and his film Killers of the Flower Moon leave empty-handed at the 96th Academy Awards. The feature film, although nominated 10 times, did not win any statues during the event, which took place on the night of March 10-11, 2024, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
After causing a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival, Killers of the Flower Moon won over critics and the public (AlloCiné viewers gave it a 4.1 out of 5) when it hit theaters in October 2023.
According to the novel American note Published in 2017 by David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon traces the series of murders that continued among the Osage people who made their fortune from oil in the early 20th century.
The wealth of these Native Americans immediately caught the fancy of unscrupulous white men, who intrigued, extorted, and stole as much money from the Osage as they could, before resorting to murder with impunity until the “Bureau of Investigation” (which later became the FBI) could conduct an investigation.
There is no new Oscar for Martin Scorsese
Although he is a legendary director, Martin Scorsese has only won the Academy Award for Best Director once, in 2007 for The Departed, which also won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
This year it was Christopher Nolan who collected the precious statue for the best director for Oppenheimer and this is his first Oscar! Even if Martin Scorsese doesn’t add a new Oscar to his collection of awards, he still remains a legendary filmmaker.
Indeed, thanks to his nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon, he can boast the living director with the most Oscar nominations for Best Director, surpassing Steven Spielberg and his nine nominations.
Lily Gladstone doesn’t have a Best Actress Oscar
Although she was among the favorites and although she won a Golden Globe for her performance, Lily Gladstone, the heart and soul of Martin Scorsese’s film, did not win the coveted statuette. Emma Stone was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in Yiorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Creatures.
Lily Gladstone’s interpretation of Molly Burkhart’s skin did not attract enough votes from the Academy of Oscars, which could have celebrated a Native American actress for the first time in its history.
But this does not detract from its historical appointment. Born on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation (Blackfeet, in English) Lily Gladstone Thus becoming the first Indian American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
We can bet that Molly Burkhart’s role and the recognition it brought her will allow her, who we found specifically in Kelly Reichardt’s movies, Certain Women and First Cow, to follow others and make a permanent name for herself in Hollywood.
