In the heart of the forest, chased by a pack of dogs, the fox runs at full speed and carries his cub in his mouth. Before being caught, he manages to drop the baby down the fence. Thanks to Big Daddy Owl taking him under his wing, the fox cub is then adopted by a loving farmer who names him Rox.
Meanwhile, next door, old hunter Amos Slade acquires a new little dog, Rookie, which he intends to train to teach him how to track all kinds of game.
When they come face-to-face, Roxy and Rookie quickly become best friends, never suspecting for a second that hounds usually kill foxes.
- Tonight with the Family: Created 47 years ago, this somewhat forgotten Disney still has some much-loved characters
Difficult times for Disney
Made in the early 1980s, during a particularly difficult time for the house of Disney, whose artists parted amid artistic disagreements (for example, Don Bluth would leave the company to establish his own studios and design films. Like Fievel or The Little Dinosaur), the Rox and Rouky project still manages to overcome disagreements and to offer the public a wonderful story of friendship.
Adapted from Daniel P. From Mannix’s story with a much (much) darker plot than what we know, the 24th animated classic from Enchanted Studios is especially remembered for the cute meeting of its two heroes and their carefree games around a tree trunk. , but also in a scene that is still one of the most disappointing in Disney history.
One of the saddest scenes in the studio
We, of course, want to talk about the sequence in which, after learning that Amos Slade would not hesitate to shoot his fox at the slightest opportunity, the farmer decides to take Rox into the woods and say goodbye to him. Bursting with a heart-rending song, accompanied by lyrics sadly announced by a poor old lady, the scene is absolutely heartwarming.
So we recommend bringing tissues when you and your family (re)discover this adorable gem from the Disney studio!

What will you like…
- The film’s supporting characters, particularly Big Mama Owl, are comforting and endearing
- Roxy and Ruki’s beautiful friendship
What could be bothering them…
- Evil hunter Amos Slade and his dog Chef, whose tantrums and wild barking are enough to worry little ones.
- The terrible bear that attacks the heroes at the end of the film is very successful and therefore quite dangerous.
