On July 10, Splendor Films will release the iconic Dead or Alive trilogy in theaters in a restored version! Directed by the very prolific and iconic Takashi Miike, 3 feature films left their mark on Japanese cinema in the early 2000s.
Cult trilogy!
In the first installment, released in 1999 in the Land of the Rising Sun, police officer Jojima waged a merciless war against gangster Ryuichi. The latter is trying to control the Japanese underworld in the Shinjuku area.
In the second episode, which was released in 2002, this time we follow Mizuki’s character. Responsible for the execution of a yakuza leader, he is prioritized by Shu, his old childhood friend. Shu finds Mizuki on his home island and becomes the godfather of the orphan school. But work regains its rights.
Finally, in Opus 3, the story takes us to 2346. A new society led by a mad mayor forces the citizens to take a drug that renders them sterile. Despite everything, a group of resistance fighters is trying to overthrow the government.
AlloCiné viewers love this “extreme and stunning” trilogy, describing the films as “completely insane”. “Dead or Alive is a completely unique thriller whose opening scene and especially the final scene will remain in the memory of all viewers. It is iconic!”makes Carne happy.
The mad dog of Japanese cinema, Takashi Miike, has dynamited the 7th Japanese art with this unbridled and utterly insane trilogy, joyfully breaking free from genre codes. The unpredictable and daring director moves between genres in these 3 must-see films.
Prolific filmmaker
Very active and productive, Takeshi Miike alternates between television and film. In 2002, thanks to the 1999 Bloody Love Story Audition, Takashi Miike achieved international recognition.
In 13 years, he wrote and directed more than 60 films. His cinema attracts more and more audiences and speaks to critics, especially with his sensitive themes full of taboos, such as the representation of sex and violence, as well as the feelings that are provoked and repressed in Visitor Q or Ichi the Killer (2001).
His mix of genres (crime, action, thriller, drama…) in each of his projects gives his cinema a special and unclassifiable genre. His last feature film “First Love” was released in 2020 in France.
The story takes us to Tokyo at night. Leo, a young boxer, meets his “first love”, Monica, a drug addict umbrella girl. He is voluntarily involved in the drug trade. Throughout the night, a corrupt cop, a yakuza, his sworn enemy, and an assassin sent by the Chinese Triads will be chasing them.
