Russell Crowe (“Thor: Love and Thunder”) will star in the cast of “The Pope’s Exorcist”, a supernatural thriller directed by Julius Avery (“Operation Overlord”).
In the film, Crowe will play Gabriele Amorth, a legendary Italian priest who performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. The screenplay is based on Amorth’s published memoirs “An Exorcist Tells His Story” and “An Exorcist: More Stories”.
In addition to these publications, Amorth, who died in 2016, left behind a number of additional accounts of his exploits while exorcising people around the world.
Screen Gems has acquired the rights to all texts for the production.
The project has been circulating in the studio for some time. The current script was written by Evan Spiliotopoulos (“Beauty and the Beast”) and had revisions by Chuck MacLean (“City on a Hill”). This material was already based on previous drafts by Michael Petroni (“Visions of the Past”) reviewed by Chester Hastings and R. Dean McCreary, both authors of the short film “Fanboy”.
There is still no set date for filming or a release date for the film.
