John Cena is not the only man who appeared without clothes at the Oscars: the controversial story

On March 10, the Academy Awards ceremony took place, where “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were the films with the most awards of the night, in addition to Ryan Gosling’s musical introduction to the song “I’m just Ken” and appearance of John Cena.

John Cena appears ‘naked’ at the 2024 Oscars

As part of a sketch during this year’s Oscars, Jimmy Kimmel mentioned the man who appeared naked at the ceremony in 1974, who was seen running after the host.

Kimmel reenacted the event to have John Cena run shirtless on stage after the actor was set to present the Best Costume category, which was won by “Poor Things.”

After refusing to run shirtless, the “Peacemaker” star finally placed the envelope with the winner’s name in front of his genitals, walking to the side so as not to show anything.

Although many thought it was a joke, after he was later covered with a curtain, in fact John Cena participated in the protest of the costume designers’ union, whose motto is “You’re naked without us” (without us, they are naked).

Who was the first man to appear naked at the Oscars?

Although many people believed that Cena was the first man to appear naked on the Oscars stage, it actually first happened at the 1974 ceremony, when a man named Robert Opel made history by running naked after host David Niven.

Niven was to host Elizabeth Taylor, who would announce the Best Picture category. During his speech, the presenter emphasized the importance of this award ceremony, but before he could finish, Robert Opel made the peace sign and ran off the stage.

Robert’s appearance lasted a few seconds and the ceremony continued, but that was enough to make history. Several rumors suggest that the photographer agreed to the event after identifying himself as a journalist, while others state that it was all planned by producer Jack Haley Jr.

Opel was an English teacher, photographer and gay rights activist. In addition to taking off his clothes at the Oscars, he also did so at a Los Angeles City Council meeting and at an art gallery in San Francisco, United States.

It was on July 7, 1979 that the photographer was murdered by two criminals who tried to rob his studio in San Francisco, California, at the age of 39.

In 2010, his nephew directed a 78-minute documentary called Uncle Bob, chronicling his uncle’s life and murder.
