Leaders of US intelligence agencies on Tuesday lobbied members of the House of Representatives to approve further military aid to Ukraine, saying it would not only help Kiev in its war against Russia but also deter Chinese aggression.
“This has consequences for American interests that go … directly to our interests in the Indo-Pacific,” CIA Director William Burns said at the annual House of Representatives Intelligence Committee hearing on global threats to state security United.
“This type of outcome will fuel the ambitions of the Chinese leadership and undermine the confidence that our partners and allies in the Indo-Pacific have in our reliability,” Burns said.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, an ally of former President Donald Trump, has so far refused to call a vote on a bill that would provide an additional $60 billion to Ukraine, more than two years after Russia began its its invasion.
The measure passed the Democratic-controlled Senate, and both House Republicans and Democrats said it would pass the House if Republican leaders allowed it to come to a vote.
Rep. Mike Turner, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said some members of Congress support aid to Ukraine but, “wrongly, in my opinion,” argue that the Ukrainian government can afford to delay such aid.
Burns agrees, saying, “I already see the Ukrainian military rationing ammunition, I already see it becoming more vulnerable to Russian attacks from the air, from drones, from missiles, from planes.”
