The man killed by a bus hijacker at the bus station in Rio de Janeiro this Tuesday 12, suffered injuries to the heart, lungs and spleen, according to the Souza Aguiar municipal hospital, where he was admitted. The victim, identified as Bruno Lima da Costa Soares, 34, was hospitalized in serious condition and is undergoing surgery, hospital staff said.
According to the medical team, Bruno underwent successful stabilization surgery and is expected to undergo further surgery. He also received six bags of blood. According to Rio de Janeiro’s Health Minister, Daniel Soranz, the victim had two puncture wounds, to the chest and abdomen. The information comes from the newspaper O Globo.
Bruno is from Juiz de Fora (MG) and was in Rio de Janeiro for a training period at Petrobras, a company for which he was recently hired after passing the selection for the position of ballast operator. He was outside the bus headed to the city of Minas Gerais and which ended up being taken by the criminal identified as Paulo Sérgio de Lima, aged 29.

According to the spokesperson of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro, Colonel Marco Andrade, Paulo Sérgio was frightened by Bruno’s presence and believed he was a police officer when he opened fire on the passenger. Another person was hit by shrapnel and was treated at the bus station clinic.
Both the municipal health department and the oil workers’ union have requested blood donations for Bruno. Donations can be made from Wednesday 13th at Hemorio, located in Rua Frei Caneca, 8, in the center of Rio, from 7am to 6pm, from Monday to Sunday including holidays.

The kidnapper was running away
The suspect was identified early Tuesday evening as Paulo Sérgio de Lima, 29. Resident in the community of Rocinha, he was fleeing to Minas Gerais due to a territorial dispute between the faction he was part of in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Paulo Sérgio also has a history of armed robberies, according to the Secretary of State for Security, Victor Cesar.
The kidnapping, which took place in Rodoviária Novo Rio, lasted about three hours. Paulo Sérgio took around 16 passengers hostage until he surrendered to the police in the early evening.
There was gunfire before the passengers were taken hostage and two people were injured, including Bruno Lima.
The Prime Minister’s Secretary of State, Colonel Luiz Henrique Marinho Pires, and the Commander of the Special Police Operations (BOPE) Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Uirá do Nascimento Ferreira, coordinated the actions on site.
After cautious negotiations with police officers from the BOPE Tactical Intervention Company, the criminal surrendered and there were no further injuries. Police officers from the Tourist Areas Police Battalion (BPTur), the 4th BPM (São Cristóvão) and the 5th BPM (Praça da Harmonia) intensified policing around the perimeter and worked to cordon off the area.
