Akira Toriyama: Where and when will Dragon Ball creator’s posthumous series be available?

The announcement of Akira Toriyama’s death has left Dragon Ball fans in deep grief. The manga legend, the Japanese author, died on March 1 of a subdural hematoma. His death marked the end of an era for those who grew up with his work, but it also halted his new projects.

Postpartum release

Because even though he now only holds the position of Dragon Ball Super manga supervisor, Akira Toriyama has never stopped working on developing the franchise inspired by his work. And one of his manga adaptations will be released posthumously in the coming weeks.

The Sand Land anime will definitely be available on Disney+ starting March 20th. This program consists of the first half consisting of a serialization of the film Sand Land (unpublished in France), while the second follows a completely new story compared to the manga (available from Glenat in one volume).

Serialization of the film Sand Land

Published in the summer of 2000, the Sand Land manga follows the adventures of the demon prince Beelzebub who joins forces with an ex-sheriff named Thief. After a monopoly imposed by the self-proclaimed king of the desert, two Akldamas set out on the trail of a fountain that could save villages from drought.

Although Dragon Ball and Dr. Less well known than Slump, this manga made Akira Toriyama proud. However, we had to wait almost a quarter of a century for this title to become the subject of an animated adaptation. The mangaka was involved as a supervisor, signing the project’s concept art as well as new story outlines.

At least the mangaka managed to live long enough to see Land of Sand in theaters (the film was released on August 18th in Japan). Therefore, with a very special emotion, fans will be able to discover a new anime imagined by the father of Dragon Ball.
