In 1896, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert were elderly siblings who had never married, living together on their ancestral farm in Green Gables, a suburb of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, Canada. In need of help, they decide to adopt an orphan to help them on a daily basis. However, when Matthew goes to pick up the baby at the station, it’s an orphan with an “E” waiting for them: young Anne Shirley, 13, a brilliant teenager, full of life and imagination, who talks a lot and doesn’t lack faith.
At her age, Anne has already been through almost everything: orphaned when her parents died when she was still a child, ridiculed for her hair color and speech (which makes her more adult than some), she was mistreated everywhere. His path, from the foster homes where he served, to the orphanage where he was placed. But the young girl does not lack optimism and enthusiasm, and may eventually light up her new home thanks to her courage, intelligence and lively personality.
A reinterpretation (more loose than literal) of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s 1908 children’s literature classic Anne of Green GablesMoira Wally-Beckett’s Canadian series (Breaking Bad), better known as ‘Teenage’, still managed to appeal to audiences of all ages – yes, even Ryan Reynolds won (and also mobilized to ensure that he got another season of vanity).

No, Anna with an “E” is not only aimed at young people and does not shy away from difficult issues. From the problems of child abandonment and orphanages to gender inequality and the place of women in society, the adventures of this young 19th century girl remain relevant, subtly adapted to our concerns today. Here we also talk about psychological trauma, racism, religion, homosexuality, school bullying and freedom of expression.

Aliens Feminist and Loyal (and with a great theme song you shouldn’t miss), Anna with an “E”. It’ll make you laugh as much as it will make you cry – in fact, it’s one of the top 7 Netflix series that will make you cry, according to viewers. The show paints a portrait of an attractive teenager with exemplary strength of character, in search of freedom and ready to shake conventions to find his place in a world of outdated ideals (not yet) and is definitely part of the list of series. Heroes who inspire…
And if the series screams charm and sincerity, it is thanks to its revelation, the sparkling and moving young Amybeth McNulty, shining with naturalness and spontaneity – which we have since seen in the 4th season of Stranger Things and which should become the fifth and part. The last season of the show.

Add to that the costumes, sets and grand scenery, and you’re transported to a past ripe for revolution and a series ripe for neglect.
- Want to discover another equally exotic must-see historical series on Netflix? it is so!
