Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter… the great fantasy and sci-fi sagas that take us into fictional worlds all have their own dialect. And Dune is no exception, thanks to the language the Fremen speak. Which really doesn’t exist.
It’s really a made-up language. or “conlang” (compression “constructed language”), as stated Telerama In an interview with the inventors of the language created for the needs of Denis Villeneuve’s films.
Experts in the field, because already Jesse and David J. We owe the Petersons the Dothraki Trigedaslang of The 100 or Game of Thrones. and Chuck from Dune, featured in Frank Herbert’s novel and whose vocabulary has been enriched for the big screen.
700 words made for movies
“In the real world Chakoba is a hunter-gatherer dialect used in parts of Georgia”explained by David J. Peterson to Télérama. “For the saga of the novels, Frank Herbert only borrowed the name. Then he introduced words from several languages that interested him, especially for names of places or characters, such as shai-hulud, lisan al gaib, sietch.”
“We were tasked with using these words to anchor the film. We arranged them and put them together so that they made sense. But without grammar and structure, his language wasn’t practical.” And so Jesse and David J. Peterson wrote seven hundred words (“Adding prefixes and suffixes to roots”), which makes it possible to hold a conversation… but only partially.
“Chacob’s language would theoretically be too different to be recognizable”
“However, this is the language spoken by the Fremen on Arakis in 10191 . . . so there is no translation for ‘train’, ‘computer’ . . .”Jesse Peterson clarifies, after specifically recalling his desire to rely as little as possible on existing languages: “Theoretically it would be too different to be recognizable. So we didn’t want it to have the characteristics of languages that are currently spoken.”
If you’ve set a goal to know how to speak like a Fremen by the end of the year, when you get out of a Dune 2 session, know that it won’t be easy. Because even if you have the basics of Jesse and David J.
