After Akira Toriyama: What’s Next for the Dragon Ball Franchise?

After Akira Toriyama: What’s Next for the Dragon Ball Franchise?

Akira Toriyama’s disappearance on March 1 marked not only the disappearance of the manga giant, but also the suspension of many of the legendary Japanese artist’s ongoing projects. We know that the Sand Land series, adapted from one of his short manga, will posthumously air on Disney+ starting March 20th.

But Toriyama-sensei’s death also casts doubt on the future of its most famous franchise, Dragon Ball. With over 260 million copies sold worldwide, it is still one of the best-selling manga of all time.

First of all, the Dragon Ball Super manga should continue to be published. Akira Toriyama was not the author of this series, which is illustrated by Toyotaro. However, it remains to be seen whether the death of Toriyama, who remained in charge of the work, will have consequences for the quality of the manga.

A new series is expected by the end of the year

A new series was also announced before the end of the year. Titled Dragon Ball Daima, this anime follows the adventures of the franchise’s main characters as they return to childhood! A synopsis reminiscent of Dragon Ball GT, the unofficial sequel to DBZ…

Although he is not a series creator, Akira Toriyama was still involved as a program supervisor, signing concept art for the characters in the process. Like Sand Land, this series will be released posthumously at the end of the year, at a currently unknown date (a French broadcaster has yet to be announced).

Anticipated Tenkaichi Budokai 4… New Live-Action Ahead?

Although a new movie is in the works (but the plot of which is not yet known), the project that Dragon Ball fans have been waiting for the most is the video game DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ᲜᲣᲚẦ. This sequel to the Tenkaichi Budokai trilogy will offer no less than 160 playable characters, 24 of which will be available at launch.

There are currently no plans for a live-action adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s manga. The memory of the disastrous Dragonball Evolution is still fresh in the minds of many fans, and its lead actor even apologized to the mangaka after his death was announced.

However, a new live-action adaptation seems inevitable, especially after the success of One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender series on Netflix…

Remember that all series from the Dragon Ball universe can be found on Crunchyroll!
