Survivors report 60 deaths crossing the Mediterranean

The dinghy was rescued by a humanitarian ship

At least 60 migrants are said to have died while crossing from Libya to Italy in the central Mediterranean Sea on board a rubber dinghy.

The number is estimated by the 25 survivors of the ship saved last Wednesday by the humanitarian ship Ocean Viking of the NGO SOS Méditerranée (13).

“The survivors left Zawiya, Libya, seven days before the rescue. The engine broke down after three days, leaving the boat adrift without water or food”, reads a message from the entity on X (formerly Twitter) .

“Survivors say at least 60 people died during the journey, including women and at least one boy,” the NGO added.

Two 25 survivors collapsed aboard the Ocean Viking and were evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Sicily by the Italian Coast Guard. There is no information yet on his health status.

According to SOS Méditerranée, all the rescued migrants are in “conditions of extreme physical and mental vulnerability”.

The Central Mediterranean route is one of the deadliest in the world and, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has already recorded 22,950 people dead or missing during the crossings since 2014, including 226 in 2024 alone.
