‘The Boy and the Heron’ wins 2024 Oscars for Best Animated Feature
The evening of March 10 marked the second time that Hayao Miyazaki, the film’s director, won an Oscar. The first time was in 2003, for “Spirited Away”.
“The Boy and the Heron” tells the story of Mahito who, after losing his mother at the age of 12, connects with a heron who is capable of revealing important secrets to him. The plot is partly inspired by real events in the life of its director.
Although the film’s director, Hayao Miyazaki, was not present at the ceremony, the team at Studio Ghibli, his production house, accepted the award on his behalf.
Kiyofumi Nakajima, chief operating officer of Studio Ghibli, said in a press release:
“I really appreciate that the work created after overcoming these difficulties has been seen by so many people around the world. Both Hayao and I have grown quite old. I am grateful to receive such an honor at my age and take it as a message to continue my work. “I will dedicate myself to working harder for the future.”
Where to see ‘The Boy and the Heron’, Best Animated Feature at the 2024 Oscars?
In Mexico, “The Boy and the Heron” is still showing in theaters, however, fans will have to wait a while before they can enjoy the movie on streaming.
In the United States, it will arrive on the Max catalog (the platform previously known as HBO Max) starting in the second half of 2024 thanks to an agreement between the film’s distributors and Warner Discovery MAX.
In the lands of the Aztecs, it is expected to be available on Netflix, since it is the platform with which Studio Ghibli has collaborated for the projection of its titles.
While the release date on these services is being announced, fans can plan a Hayao Miyazaki movie marathon, as both have a long list of titles from the director.
Why didn’t Hayao Miyazaki attend the 2024 Oscars?
Studio Ghibli commercial director Kiyofumi Nakajima accepted the award on behalf of the beloved director. In a press conference, he explained Miyazaki’s absence from the ceremony:
“I would like to thank everyone associated with this film. We would like to apologize that the director, Hayao Miyazaki, and the producer, Toshio Suzuki, could not be here today. Forgive them, they are a little older.’
We must remember that Hayao Miyazaki is 83 years old.
