ABC aired the first episode of the seventh and final season of Station 19, the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, in the US last night. And the least we can say is that this first opus left the fate of one of the firemen uncertain.
A character between life and death?
In the season 6 finale, the firefighters of Station 19 had to deal with the collapse of the hotel dance floor, where Ben Warren’s (Jason George) Medal of Honor was being presented.
In the final minutes, while Jack (Gray Damon) was fine, the young firefighter collapsed. When we find them in the first episode of Season 7 of Station 19, Jack is at the Gray Sloan Memorial holding Amelia (Caterina Scorsone).
If the surgeon is initially convinced of his health, he discovers that he actually suffers from encephalomalacia, a scarring of the brain from a previous injury.
Amelia then explains to Andy that she may have lost her fine motor skills on her left side. Not sure if he can get over it but with physical therapy anything is possible.
However, Dr. Shepherd specifies that the chances of him ever becoming a firefighter again are very slim. After being abandoned at birth, forced to survive in foster homes, more terrifying than ever, and having chaotic romantic relationships, Jack must face new challenges.
Studying the risks of the profession
Station 19 anchor Peter Page explained on the microphone TVLine The reasons for this ruthlessness towards Jack. “It was very important to me to explore what it means to give up on a dream, and there’s something about Jack Gibson, his honesty and vulnerability, that makes him the perfect character to explore that question.”
The showrunner also explained Deadline that he also wanted to study the risks of firefighting: “It’s something we don’t talk about enough, but a career as a firefighter is like a ticking time bomb. It’s a career you choose out of passion and can end at any time. This is a question that was important for us to explore.“
It remains to be seen how Jack will recover from this tragedy. One thing is for sure, his exit from Station 19 does not mean his departure from the series. “Once you become a member of 19“, concluded Joanne Clack, the series’ second showrunner. We are forever“.
