The Fever: who inspires Marie Kinsky, Ana Girardot’s character?

Feverthe new great series from Canal+

After recounting the journey of a French president in the making Black Baron (2016-2020)Eric Benzekri returns to Canal+ with a new original creation entitled Fever. This time we don’t follow politicians directly, but communication experts. The latter are responsible for managing the crisis of a football team, after the champion insulted his coach by calling him “sale toubab” (“dirty white” in Wolof). An exit that will provoke a reaction in the media space and that will conquer Maria Kinskywho comments on the country’s news every day.

The latter, a former communicator who created a character after five absences, like “pour gasoline on hot topics and light the fuse“, as described Anna Girardot at a press conference. On his part, Sam Berger, who is part of the team responsible for Crisi Racing, knows this well. And he feels that Marie is capable of throwing France into chaos with her words.

Fever East an exciting and disturbing propositionextremely well written and carried out by an exceptional cast, including Nina Meurisse, Anna Girardot and Benjamin Biolay. Her first is excellent in the series, she plays a Sam who is both empathetic and hard to follow for those around her. Ana Girardot, for her part, has the bad role. That of Marie Kinsky, a disturbing manipulator who, under his angelic appearance, it is a real danger. The actress perfectly embodies this character which remains no less pleasant to watch because it is in a form of voluntary exaggeration.

Marie Kinsky: words instead of a chainsaw

There is no doubt that some will make connections between this fictional character and political figures or the current audiovisual landscape. Also during a press conference organized by Canal+, Eric Benzekri was asked about this character and possible sources of inspiration. The author (who worked in collaboration with Laure Chichmanov and Anthony Gizel), explained that, for Marie Kinsky, it was first and foremost about what she represented, namely a global movement of populism. Then, the creator made clear his intention to create a character who, through his spectacular show, borders on realityand becomes a metaphor for social networks.

What strikes me emotionally is the abolition of reality by screens. This world that is not real, but that modifies the real world, because it comes out of the screen. And Marie Kinsky, that’s it. It represents a world of screens, in the sense that everything is too much. It’s too theatrical, too beautiful, too violent, too seductive, too disturbing… And this is too much of social networks.

Eric Benzekri then spoke about personalities who could be a source of inspiration, avoiding drawing parallels with current French figures, and always returning to the issue of social networks.

Javier Milei, the new Argentine president, appearing with a chainsaw during a demonstration. He is obviously a source of inspiration. But Coluche is also a source of inspiration. And there are many others. But overall my inspiration remains social networks and influencers. Because I think we’re in a moment where politics is becoming an influencer’s playground.

Finally, Ana Girardot clarified regarding this character, so far from her usual roles: “It represents a form of manipulation of which we could be victims and of which we must be very careful.“.
