Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni completed the program in Cairo
– The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, traveled this Sunday (17) to Cairo for a summit between the European Union and Egypt, including a series of bilateral agreements under the Mattei Plan, an important investment plan in African countries to promote economic and social development and combat irregular migration.
The president of the EU executive, Ursula von der Leyen, also visited the country; Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo; the Greek Kyriakos Mitsotakis; Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer; and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis.
Meloni met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for about half an hour, then the summit began.
«This is a historic meeting for relations between Egypt and the European Union: I am proud of the role played by Italy in achieving this objective. The global and strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union fits into the current context in which we are facing numerous crises that could destabilize the Mediterranean region to an unimaginable level, Meloni said.
Among the “common challenges to face together”, Meloni cited “food and water security, energy security, development and migration”: “This initiative demonstrates our desire to strengthen and encourage a new structural method of cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean”.
“We are faced with a very complex international situation. The Gaza crisis is at the forefront of our concerns. It is necessary to reach a ceasefire, guarantee humanitarian corridors and obtain the release of the hostages. Italy supports Egypt’s efforts and other countries and has been at the forefront from the beginning to guarantee humanitarian aid”, he assured.
The main objective of the meeting is to elevate relations between the country and the bloc to the level of a global and strategic partnership, with a total allocation of loans and grants of 7.4 billion euros by 2027.
The contributions aim to support Egypt’s economic and social reforms, help mitigate the impact of the current crises in Africa and the Middle East and support the country in strengthening its land and maritime border control capabilities to deal with the emergency migratory.
The meeting will culminate with the signing of a joint declaration that will lay the foundation for the strategic partnership.
