Tonight on Netflix: The trashy action-adventure movie we love!

Dear Netflix subscribers looking for solid action-adventure entertainment, you can watch Sahara tonight, starring Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz! Even if it’s quite loved (rated 2.4 out of 5 by AlloCiné viewers), it has all the elements of a movie that will have a good time and make you forget your worries. Yes Yes !

Matthew McConaughey

Dr. Eva Rojas (Cruz) works for the WHO to discover the origin of a mysterious disease in Mali. He is threatened with death by Zakara, a corrupt Tuareg. Dirk Pitt (McConaughey), a member of the National Underwater and Maritime Agency, saves him at the last minute. Once this is done, the adventurer convinces his boss to lend him a ship to go to the Niger to find a Confederate ship sunk years ago and which contains rare gold coins.

Along the way, he must drop off Eva Rojas in Mali, only to discover that she is still being pursued by assassins, and their peaceful journey turns into a dangerous adventure!

A total flop though

Sahara was directed by Breck Eisner, a director without much experience and the filming was very expensive. The film doubled its budget and was a royal box office hit, bringing in $119 million worldwide for a production cost (excluding marketing costs) of $160 million! In comparison, it’s less good than Matt McConaughey’s far less expensive romantic comedy: How to Dump in 10 Lessons.

Steve Zahn fishing with Matt McConaughey

Sahara does have some charms, though: action to spare, a McConaughey/Steve Zahn duo over the top, Penélope Cruz as an action girl in spite of herself, and some predictable but entertaining twists. It doesn’t take much to have a good evening watching this movie, which you should give (again) a chance.
