A survey commissioned by the creators of the Unity graphics engine and conducted on over 300 respondents by market research firm CIST reveals that 62% of studios use artificial intelligence at some point during game development.
According to data released by Unity in its annual market reportthe average time taken to launch games increased from 218 days in 2022 to 304 days in 2023.
For this reason, many studios have adopted artificial intelligence tools to improve the development process, with the aim of making it faster and less expensive. The main use of artificial intelligence (via Eurogamer) is to improve character animations, followed by streamlining the programming required for the game. After them, the most frequent uses involve generating arts and levels, designing scripts and narrative, and running automated game testing.
According to research (via VGC), 71% of movie studios surveyed that said they were using AI saw improvements in their operations. Other data shows that 38% of film studios were reluctant to start using AI, 43% said they were interested in using it but didn’t have the time to do so, and 24% felt they didn’t have the skills techniques needed to do so. .
Recently released online shooter The Finals has been criticized by some players for using artificial intelligence in voice acting, with Embark Studios, responsible for the game, subsequently saying that it does not aim to make games without using real actors.
