Pope Francis on Wednesday made a fresh call for peace through negotiations, lamenting the bloody conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and once again limited his public speech to his weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square due to health problems.
“We must never forget that war is always a defeat, we cannot continue to wage war, we must make every effort to mediate, to negotiate the end of the war, we pray for this”, said the Pontiff in a brief comment at the end of the public, citing “martyr” Ukraine and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Francisco, 87, who has mobility problems and has been suffering from colds and bronchitis in recent weeks, once again did not read most of the texts prepared for the public.
He delegated the task to an assistant, telling the faithful that he was still required to limit his interventions in public.
Earlier this month, Francis sparked controversy when he suggested in an interview with Swiss broadcaster RSI that Ukraine should “show the courage of the white flag” and start talks with Russia. Cardinal Pietro Parolin then clarified that Russia must first stop its aggression.
