Lolita in spite of herself
” of two Squid game and Lolita in spite of herselfA new drama about the horrors of adolescence and school bullying” : Can we do anything more effective and intriguing than these few words written by the Séries Mania teams to present the pyramid game? No.
And the worst (or best) part is that it’s not even a lie. The first few episodes featured in Lille aren’t really Squid Game, but there’s a contest where the losers pay a heavy price and some mischief between teenage girls (aside from the occasional over-explanatory voiceover) that’s worth Lolita notwithstanding. myself. in the service of a serious matter.
Trigger warnings
Harassment at school, physical violence, humiliation, self-mutilation, suicide… “trigger warnings” or “TW” (Warnings about work whose elements may recall trauma) are numerous, and the series may even turn some viewers off. and infuriate others in the face of injustice and the behavior of the characters portrayed as the villains of the story for the moment.
Despite the peak of tension it creates, the pyramid game is captivating with the story of this new student who is asked to participate in his class’s pyramid game. Here, in two or three tries, neither Patrice Lafont nor guess the words, but vote to choose the most popular teenager… and the one who will be abandoned by everyone and the victim of all the bullying.
Thanks to its decidedly pop form, with slow motion, voiceover, a switch to black and white in the opening scene, and a cut that recalls its status as a webtoon adaptation (an online comic, often from South Korea), the series. Takes welcome side steps.
With Bondian accents, the first notes of which remind us of “Skyfall”.
Which adds a bit of color to this dark story while increasing its impact tenfold by playing on the tonal gap between form and content. Where a more realistic, quasi-documentary approach probably wouldn’t have had the same effectiveness.
The series also knows how to show humor: whether directly or more ironically, when pointing out the hypocrisy of the establishment in the fight against school bullying, the issue of equal opportunities is not just a big joke. In these moments, the entire Korean community is targeted, and Pyramid Game thus becomes closer to Squid Game, beyond their respective title similarities.
To say that the series hooked us to the point where we wanted to see a sequel is an understatement, but we have good news on the subject.
When will it happen in France?
Unlike the other series presented at this festival, the first two episodes of Pyramid Game are not available on the Séries Mania+ platform. But the show airs in France from May 2024 on Paramount+, which is already hosting an intense deal.
The exact date is not yet known, but you won’t have to wait long to discover the series. And for us to see the next episodes.
