The documentary Rise and Fall – John Galliano, about one of the most important and controversial designers in the history of fashion, premieres on March 28 in Brazilian cinemas. Directed by the winner of OscarKevin Macdonald (Whitney, Marley), the film is another partnership between MUBI It is O2 Play.

Galliano dressed the most important and beautiful men and women in the world, for fifteen years working in the maisons Givenchy and Dior. He was widely recognized as one of the designers most successful fashion designers of the 1990s and 2000s. His career, however, ended abruptly, just over ten years ago, after he was caught on camera when, outside Café La Perle, in Paris, he launched anti-Semitic insults to people close to where he was.

The powerful documentary records the career of Galliano from being a fashion student at Central Saint Martins University in London, to becoming the creative director of one of the biggest fashion brands in the world. It also honestly reveals his struggle with drug addiction and the industry pressures he faced along the way.

With archive footage of incredible haute couture and high fashion shows of the time, extensive interviews with the man himself Gallianoconversations with Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Penelope Cruz, Charlize Theron, Anna Wintour, Edward Enninfulamong others, this detailed portrait of Galliano challenges the toxic work culture behind the fashion industry.

Rise and Fall — John Galliano is produced by Chloe Mamelok (The Rescue) It is Kevin Macdonald, through his production company, KGB Films, in association with Condé Nast Entertainment. The editor, Avdhesh Mohla(Sachin: A Billion Dreams, Billie the Ripper)received a nomination for Best Editing at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifa) from 2023, for this film. The soundtrack is composed by fellow award nominee Ivor NovelloToneHodge (The Mauritanian, McMafia). And the documentary’s cinematographers are David Harriman, Magda Kowalczyk (Cow, Last Song from Kabul) who competed for Bifa 2021, Patrick Blossierseveral times indicated to the Caesar Awards (1988, 2003 and 2007), and Nelson Hume (Whitney).
