The fantasy film “Damsel” premiered on Netflix on March 8, 2024, and is already attracting attention for the locations where it was filmed. With Millie Bobby Brown, actress of the Stranger Things series, one of the highlights of the production are the scenarios chosen to develop the story.
“Donzela” was recorded in several locations in Portugal, during the spring of 2023. One of the locations was Serra da Estrela. Scenes were also filmed at Batalha Monastery, Leiria Castle and the river that runs through Tomar.

Battle
Batalha is a Portuguese village in the district of Leiria, in the province of Beira Litoral. The city was founded in 1500 by King João I, in the region of the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, also known as Batalha Monastery. The monastery was built in thanks for the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota, in 1385. Highlighting the monastery’s Gothic-style architecture, it made a perfect setting for the film.
Take
Tomar is a Portuguese city in the center of the country, in the Santarém district. The city is located 38.6 km from Fatima, 45 km from Batalha and 50 km from Leiria. It is a Templar city, developed after the construction of its castle in 1160. For the film, Tomar served as the setting for the Kingdom of Aurea, thanks to the rivers, castles and convents it presents along the way.
Serra da Estrela
Many exterior scenes of “Donzela” were filmed in the Serra da Estrela. It was the protagonist’s place of origin. Serra da Estrela, located in the Centro region (Beiras region), designates the mountain range where the highest altitudes of mainland Portugal are found.
Douro Valley
The Douro Valley is a landscape heritage known for being the most famous wine region in Portugal. There the vineyards stretch along the slope on both banks of the river, which has enchanted people for centuries. The landscape features canyons, ancient forests and natural habitats. It was the ideal location for Maiden’s action sequences.
