Marcelo Freixo claims he called Rivaldo Barbosa when he learned of the murder of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes
On the morning of this Sunday, the 24th, the federal police arrested three suspects of having ordered the death of Marielle Franco. Among these there is Rivaldo Barbosa – who, in 2018, when the murder occurred, was head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro. “I called Rivaldo Barbosa when I heard about the murder of Marielle and Anderson and was on my way to the crime scene. He was the head of the Civil Police and the next day he received the families with me,” said Freixo, in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
“Now Rivaldo is in prison for having acted to protect the instigators of the crime, preventing the investigation from progressing. This says a lot about Rio de Janeiro,” he added.
Furthermore, Freixo explained that there were five deputies who conducted the investigation into the murder of Marielle and Anderson. “Every time they approached the offenders, they were pushed away. That’s why it took us six years to find out who killed and who ordered the murder,” he says.
For him this whole situation is “an opportunity for Rio de Janeiro to turn the page where crime, police and politics are not separated”.

The operation
This Sunday, the 24th, the Federal Police launched “Operation Murder Inc.” against the suspects of ordering the murder of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes. Until this morning, three preventive arrest warrants and 12 search and seizure warrants issued by the Federal Supreme Court had been served, all in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
According to information obtained by Terra’s political journalist, Guilherme Maziero, the three suspects in the murder of Marielle and Anderson, who were arrested, are:
- The brothers Domingos Brazão and Chiquinho Brazão, respectively Counselor of the Court of Auditors of the State of Rio de Janeiro and federal deputy of the União Brasil;
- Rivaldo Barbosa, former head of the Rio Civil Police.
The addresses where the search and seizure warrants were executed were not disclosed.
Operation Murder Inc. has the support of the State Secretariat of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, the National Secretariat of Criminal Policies and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
In addition to targeting the intellectual perpetrators of the crime of murder, the crimes of criminal organization and obstruction of justice are also investigated.
