42 years after its creation, a sci-fi franchise never seen before in France is coming to Disney+!

Macross fans, rejoice: After years of legal trouble, Disney+ has announced that it has finally secured the streaming rights to the franchise’s main series — though regional restrictions will still apply.

However, this is a major win for fans who want access to the legendary franchise internationally. Although it is a popular and fundamental Mecca of the series, fans have never had easy access to the saga, resorting to expensive imports of DVDs or other products.

The announcement is also accompanied by brand new artwork by Risa Ebata, which can be found in the post below:

What is it about?

Mixing space opera and love triangle, macro is a mecha-anime science fiction franchise created by Shoji Kawamori and Studio Nue in 1982, consisting of a series, film, OAV (original video animation), novel, manga – published here by publishers Glénat between 1998 and 2002 – and more. 40 video games and other merchandise.

That’s why Macros started with the series Super Dimension Castle which opened the whole saga. In it, a giant spacecraft of unknown and extraterrestrial origin crashed on an island in the Pacific Ocean in 1999. On Board: No crew, alive or dead, but the material suggests that the ship’s owners were giants with very advanced technology. Fearing a potential future threat elsewhere, the nations of our planet then band together to try to understand the technologies on board and activate them so they can defend themselves if necessary. Thus the SDF-1 Macross was born ten years later. But as the ship is about to launch, aliens approach…

Outside of Japan, Macross is mostly known thanks to its American adaptation produced by studio Harmony Gold and called Robotech, which was notably broadcast in France in 1987 on La Cinq, then from 1991 on Club Dorothée on TF1.

According to Le Journal du Geek, Harmony Gold has retained the rights to the original series and its film, with a view to producing a live-action adaptation… to be continued.

In the meantime, see you at the end of the year on Disney+!
