‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ could have had a darker ending

Stephen almost never returns to his universe.

It turns out that ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ almost had a different, darker ending. Marvel fans can now watch the second Doctor Strange movie from the comfort of his home and there are some bonus features and extras. In the film’s audio commentary, Screenwriter Michael Waldron and Director Sam Raimi revealed their key decisions that led to the final cut..

Towards the end of the film, Stephen Strange of Earth-616 (Benedict Cumberbatch) travels through the multiverse and battles his evil variant, the sinister Strange.

His opponent has been corrupted by the Darkhold, and Strange has to dreamwalk the Book of the Damned back to his universe and awaken another variant of himself to save the multiverse.

Strange’s actions spark an incursion and Sinster Strange’s world collapses in on itself, while our hero returns to his reality.

However, Waldron revealed that there was an alternate ending in which Strange did not return to Earth-616. He explained, “Strange gets trapped in that (raid) universe… and then (the Sinister Strange) turns around and his third eye opens.”

The third eye still opens in the final cut of the film, and Waldron admitted that this was a throwback to one of Sam Raimi’s earlier horror films.

“It was a bit of a throwback to his old ‘Evil Dead,’ and that whiny ending, or it’s like, ‘Oh my God, things went wrong at the end.’ So, yeah. We’ll see what all that means for Stephen,” he added.

But the film ends on a different cliffhanger when Strange meets another sorceress, Clea (Charlize Theron), who is from the Dark Dimension. At least, that’s what we know from what the post-credit scenes offer us.

Waldron hinted that Strange will now work as a team to reflect on what he has learned after his time in the multiverse in future films.

“The multiverse has forced a mirror in front of his face and forced him to reflect on himself, which I don’t think he’s ever refused to do,” Waldron continued.

“Even when he had that initial (car) accident (in ‘Doctor Strange’), instead of really thinking about who he was, he went off and became the most powerful wizard in the world.

“This is a guy who doesn’t want to go to therapy. I think there’s now been some forced self-reflection over the course of this adventure, and I think he’s probably more capable of working as part of a team than ever before.”
