Producer Gail Berman has revealed the first details of “Our Time”, a series inspired by the classic film “The Goonies”, confirming its development for the Disney + platform.
The project was written by Sarah Watson (creator of “The Bold Type”) and is not an adaptation of the 1985 film, but a tribute. The premise revolves around an alternate who meets three students who dream of filming their own version of the legendary Richard Donner film.
In an interview with Variety about the success of “Elvis,” its latest production, Berman was asked about the series and told how the idea came about and where it is.
“When I was at Paramount, there were these guys who were doing a Raiders of the Lost Ark movie, a scene-by-scene remake. At the time, the studio was really upset. But I thought it was an amazing idea and it stuck in my head: how can you take an idea like that and turn it into a series? “asked Berman.
High School Musical fans already know the answer, but let’s move on.
He continued: “We needed a great writer and great partners, so we brought the idea to Amblin and the kids loved it. Sarah Watson is our creator. The show is a ‘Friday Night Lights’ style story of a city and a family., and within it they tell the story of a remake of “The Goonies.” We had to go to Warner Bros., to Toby Emmerich, and ask ourselves if we could have the rights [do filme]. They said yes, of course, because of Spielberg and the Donners. Now we’re doing it for Disney +. “
The Donners mentioned are the late director Richard Donner, who directed the 1985 film and planned to do a sequel before he died last year, and his wife Lauren Shuler Donner, producer of the X-Men films and series.
In addition to having Richard Donner (who also shot “Superman – The Movie”) behind the camera, “The Goonies” was written by Chris Columbus (“Home Alone”) and Steven Spielberg in his heyday ( “ET,” and “Indiana Jones”), and assembled a young cast that ended up getting quite famous, like then-children Josh Brolin (“Avengers: Endgame”), Sean Astin (“Lord of the Rings”), Corey Feldman (“Boys Lost”) and Martha Plimpton (“The Real O” Neals “).
No actors have been announced for the cast of the series, which will pay homage to the classic. There is not even a date for the premiere.
