The President of the Senate believes that the arrest of the suspects of having ordered the murder of Marielle and the driver Anderson Gomes “represents a feeling of real hope and expectation that the truth about this case can emerge”
BRASILIA – The president of Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), announced on Tuesday 25th that the outcome of the case of the murder of the councilor Marielle Franco (PSOL) and the driver Anderson Gomes it is a “milestone in the repression of organized crime”.
“Unraveling this crime and identifying the perpetrators is something that society expects a lot, and the institutions also expected it. I congratulate all the authorities involved and, perhaps, it will be a milestone in the history of the repression of organized crime in Brazil”, he stated at the end of the ceremony celebrating the 200th anniversary of the creation of the Senate.
“It is a feeling of real hope and expectation that the real truth about this case may emerge and that those who are directly, indirectly, intellectually or otherwise responsible for this barbaric crime, this crime against democracy, for a parliamentarian in the exercise of his mandate and also his driver”, added the president of the Senate.
This Sunday, the 24th, the minister of Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexander de Moraes ordered the preventive detention of the federal deputy Chiquinho Brazão (no party-RJ), the councilor of the Court of Auditors of the State of Rio de Janeiro (TCE-RJ) Domingos Brazão and the delegate of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro Rivaldo Barbosa. The three are under investigation for their alleged involvement as masterminds in the murder of Marielle Franco and the driver Anderson Gomes in 2018. The defense of the three denies participation in the crime.
The action of Federal Policecalled Operation Murder Inc., also executed 12 search and seizure warrants Rio de Janeiro issued by the STF. According to the PF, the main objective of the offensive is to investigate those identified as “intellectual authors” of the murders, but crimes of criminal organization and obstruction of justice are also investigated.
According to the agency, The brothers’ “disgust” towards the councilor, which may have motivated the crime, was due to her actions with the communities of Jacarepaguá, a political stronghold of the Brazão, in the western area of Rio, dominated mostly by militias. Marielle would have acted “in particular in relation to land exploitation and illegal subdivisions”, which would have hindered the development of a bill drafted by Chiquinho Brazão.
All the suspects had their assets frozen. Furthermore, Moraes ordered his removal from public duties; and other precautionary measures, such as electronic ankle bracelets, night confinement at home, surrender of passports and suspension of weapons possession. The STF did not specify, in a press release, what the objectives of these measures are.
